2021 was one of the most extraordinary years in the history of financial markets. While Bitcoin dominated mainstream headlines by breaking past $60,000 for the first time, the genuinely life-changing money was being made further down the market cap rankings. Solana surged from under $2 to over $260. Dogecoin turned a joke coin into a cultural phenomenon. Cardano, XRP, and Ethereum all delivered returns that would have seemed absurd in any traditional asset class.
But which one actually made investors the most money? We used our historical price calculator to run a clean comparison: $1,000 invested in each of six major cryptocurrencies on 1 January 2021, tracked to its absolute peak value during the year. Here is what the data shows — and what each of those investments is worth right now.
The 2021 $1,000 Investment Test: Full Results
To keep the comparison fair and meaningful, we selected six coins that were already established and tradeable at the start of 2021. We tracked the peak weekly closing price each coin reached during the 2021 bull run, and calculated what a $1,000 investment at the January 2021 price would have been worth at that peak. The results are ranked by peak return.
| Cryptocurrency | Jan 2021 Price (approx.) | Peak Value of $1,000 | Peak Date | Peak Return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ~$1.80 | ~$142,000 | Nov 2021 | +14,100% | |
| ~$0.005 | ~$121,000 | May 2021 | +12,000% | |
| ~$0.18 | ~$16,800 | Sep 2021 | +1,580% | |
| ~$0.24 | ~$8,450 | Apr 2021 | +745% | |
| ~$730 | ~$6,520 | Nov 2021 | +552% | |
| ~$29,000 | ~$2,340 | Nov 2021 | +134% |
Important note: All figures above represent peak values — the highest weekly closing price each coin reached during 2021. These returns were only realised by investors who sold at exactly the right moment. In practice, most investors held through the subsequent bear market and saw a significant portion of these gains evaporate. Scroll down to check what each investment is worth at today's live price.
The Clear Winner: Solana's Extraordinary 14,000% Run
No coin in the major league came close to Solana's performance in 2021. Starting the year at roughly $1.80, SOL was still a relatively obscure layer-1 blockchain competing against Ethereum for developer attention. By November 2021, it had climbed above $260 — a gain of over 14,000% in under twelve months.
What drove it? A combination of genuine technical adoption, extremely low transaction fees compared to Ethereum, and the broader NFT and DeFi boom that sent capital flooding into alternative smart contract platforms. Solana's speed and cost advantages attracted a wave of new projects, and speculative capital followed. The result was one of the most dramatic price runs in crypto history for a coin of its market size.
A $1,000 investment on 1 January 2021 would have been worth over $142,000 at the peak. You can see the full historical chart and check what that investment is worth at today's live price on our Solana 2021 calculator page.
It is worth noting that Solana's 2021 run was not a straight line upward. The coin experienced several sharp corrections along the way, including a significant pullback in May and June 2021 that tested the conviction of early holders. Those who sold during those dips missed the majority of the eventual gains. This is a pattern that repeats across almost every major crypto bull run — the biggest returns go to those who hold through the volatility, but only if they also manage to exit before the eventual crash.
Second Place: The Dogecoin Phenomenon
Dogecoin's 2021 story is unlike any other in crypto history. A coin created as a joke in 2013, with no technical roadmap and no serious development activity, somehow became one of the most talked-about assets in the world. A $1,000 investment at the start of 2021 reached a peak value of over $121,000 by May — driven almost entirely by social media momentum, celebrity endorsements, and retail speculation rather than any fundamental development.
The peak came in early May 2021, in the days leading up to Elon Musk's appearance on Saturday Night Live. The market was pricing in a further catalyst from the broadcast. When Musk's appearance failed to deliver that catalyst — and he described Dogecoin as a "hustle" during a sketch — the price crashed sharply. It never recovered to those levels.
Dogecoin's 2021 run is the clearest possible illustration of how crypto markets can be driven by narrative rather than fundamentals, and how quickly those narratives can reverse. The coin that turned $1,000 into $121,000 at its peak had returned to a fraction of that value within months. See the current live value on our Dogecoin 2021 calculator page.
The Mid-Tier Performers: Cardano and XRP
Both Cardano and XRP delivered returns that would be considered extraordinary in any other context, yet they were overshadowed by the top performers in 2021's exceptional market.
Cardano: The Smart Contract Anticipation Trade
Cardano peaked in September 2021, ahead of its long-awaited "Alonzo" smart contract upgrade. Starting the year at around $0.18, ADA climbed above $3.10 — a gain of over 1,580%. The upgrade had been in development for years and was one of the most anticipated events in the crypto calendar. The price reflected that anticipation, peaking just before the upgrade launched and then pulling back as the "buy the rumour, sell the news" dynamic played out. See the full data on our Cardano 2021 calculator page.
XRP: The Lawsuit Discount
XRP had an unusual 2021. Despite being embroiled in an SEC lawsuit that had caused its price to collapse in late 2020, it staged a sharp recovery in April 2021, briefly touching $1.96 — a gain of over 745% from January. The lawsuit created both a ceiling on its gains (institutional investors avoided it due to regulatory uncertainty) and a floor on its losses (the community remained loyal and the underlying technology continued to be used). See the full history on our XRP 2021 calculator page.
The "Safe" Bets: Bitcoin and Ethereum
If you had played it safe with the two largest networks by market cap, your returns were still exceptional by the standards of any traditional asset class — but modest by 2021 crypto standards.
Ethereum: The DeFi and NFT Engine
Ethereum significantly outperformed Bitcoin in 2021, riding the explosion of NFTs and decentralised finance. Starting the year at around $730, ETH peaked above $4,800 in November — a gain of over 550%. A $1,000 investment would have peaked at roughly $6,520. Ethereum's outperformance over Bitcoin reflected its central role in the new applications that were driving the bull market. The Ethereum network was the infrastructure layer for the vast majority of DeFi protocols and NFT marketplaces that defined the year. See the live data on our Ethereum 2021 calculator page.
Bitcoin: The Benchmark
Bitcoin entered 2021 at roughly $29,000, already having recovered from the 2020 COVID crash and broken its 2017 all-time high. By November 2021, it peaked at just under $69,000 — a gain of roughly 134% from the January price. A $1,000 investment would have peaked at around $2,340. That is a strong return by any conventional measure, but it placed Bitcoin last in the 2021 comparison table. Bitcoin's relative underperformance in 2021 compared to smaller coins is a recurring pattern in crypto bull markets — the largest, most liquid asset tends to move first and attract institutional capital, but the highest percentage gains go to smaller coins with more room to run. See the full chart on our Bitcoin 2021 calculator page.
The Critical Question: What Are These Investments Worth Today?
The table above shows peak values — what you could have made if you had sold at exactly the right moment. But the more important question for most investors is: what are these investments worth right now, after surviving the 2022 bear market and the subsequent recovery?
The 2022 bear market was brutal. Bitcoin fell from $69,000 to below $16,000. Solana dropped from $260 to under $10. Dogecoin lost over 90% of its peak value. Cardano fell from $3.10 to below $0.25. Investors who held through the bear market saw years of gains disappear — at least temporarily.
The market has since recovered significantly. Bitcoin reached new all-time highs above $100,000 in late 2024. Whether a 2021 investment is currently in profit depends entirely on which coin you held and at what price. Our live calculators show the exact current figure for each coin, updated daily.

What the 2021 Data Tells Us About Crypto Investing
Looking back at 2021 with the benefit of hindsight, several patterns stand out clearly. First, the biggest gains in any bull market cycle consistently come from smaller, newer coins rather than established ones. Bitcoin and Ethereum are the safest bets in terms of long-term survival, but they are rarely the highest performers during a bull run. The highest percentage returns go to coins with lower market caps and more room to multiply.
Second, narrative drives price in the short term far more than technology or fundamentals. Dogecoin's performance is the clearest possible evidence of this — a coin with no technical development roadmap outperformed almost every serious blockchain project in the world for a period of months. The market does not always reward quality; it rewards attention.
Third, and most importantly, the difference between a life-changing return and a painful loss often comes down to a single decision: when to sell. Every coin in the table above gave back a substantial portion of its 2021 gains in the bear market that followed. The investors who captured the full returns shown above were the ones who sold near the top — a feat that is far easier to describe in retrospect than to execute in real time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Solana (SOL) was the best-performing major cryptocurrency of 2021. A $1,000 investment made on 1 January 2021 reached a peak value of over $142,000 by November 2021, representing a return of more than 14,000%. Dogecoin came a close second with a peak return of over 12,000%, though its peak came earlier in May 2021 and it never recovered to those levels.
The exact figure changes daily with Bitcoin's price. You can see the precise current value on our Bitcoin 2021 calculator page, which pulls live price data and shows the current value, profit or loss, and the peak moment since January 2021.
Yes — at its peak in May 2021, Dogecoin returned over 12,000% from its January 2021 price, far outperforming Bitcoin's roughly 134% peak gain over the same period. However, Dogecoin also crashed far more severely in the bear market that followed, and its long-term recovery has been much weaker than Bitcoin's.
The 2021 bull run had two distinct phases. The first peak came in April 2021, when Bitcoin briefly touched $64,000 and many altcoins hit interim highs. After a sharp correction in May and June, the market recovered and reached its ultimate highs in November 2021 — Bitcoin peaked at just under $69,000, Solana above $260, and Ethereum above $4,800. Dogecoin was the exception, peaking in May and never recovering those levels.
Following the November 2021 peak, the crypto market entered a prolonged bear market throughout 2022. Bitcoin fell from roughly $69,000 to below $16,000 by the end of 2022. Most altcoins lost 80–95% of their peak value. The collapse of the Terra/LUNA ecosystem in May 2022 and the FTX exchange bankruptcy in November 2022 accelerated the decline. The market began recovering in 2023 and Bitcoin reached new all-time highs above $100,000 in late 2024.
Historical data shows that every major crypto bear market has eventually been followed by a recovery and new all-time highs, at least for Bitcoin and Ethereum. However, past performance does not guarantee future results, and many individual altcoins from previous cycles never recovered.
